a leading service provider
to the global SHIPPING industry

Klaveness is a leading service provider to the global shipping industry

Founded in 1946, Klaveness is an operator, service provider and integrated owner with innovation as an integral part of our overall vision. In addition to being a leading service provider to the global drybulk industry, the company has a unique concept for combination carriers and provides container feeder vessels to various operators. The ability to attract and retain customers and to engage them on a journey of joint development is key to our success.

Ship owner

Klaveness is a ship owner with a unique fleet of environmentally friendly vessels. Our fleet consists of standard and specialized bulk carriers, combination carriers, as well as container vessels.

We have over 70 years experience in operating as an integrated owner, developing ship designs, managing ship building processes, securing employment and providing technical management in-house.

Combination Carriers

The most efficient and most environmentally friendly bulk transportation solution.

Klaveness has been owner and operator of combination carriers on a continuous basis since the early 1950s. Over this period Klaveness has developed and refined vessel designs and equipment, operational procedures and crew training to provide our customers with the most efficient, reliable and high quality bulk shipping service.

The combination carriers trade in dedicated trade patterns with consecutive switching between dry cargo and wet cargo shipments with minimum ballast between the laden voyages. This efficient trading pattern implies a substantial reduction in emissions per transported ton of cargo and enables Klaveness to offer lower freight costs to our customers compared to the best alternative mode of transportation.

Our current fleet consists of six specialized CABU combination carriers of about 72,500 Dwt. The CABUs have the capacity to transport caustic soda solution (CSS), floating fertilizer (UAN) and molasses as well as all form of dry bulk commodities. Since delivery of the first vessel in 2001 the CABUs have built a convincing operational track record with minimum downtime and have had more than 500 consecutive switches from dry to wet cargoes without one single cargo claim.

Klaveness has three combination carriers of about 80,500 Dwt currently under construction at OuHua Shipbuilding for delivery during the second half of 2016 and early 2017. In addition Klaveness concluded in December 2015 an order with Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for three 83,500 DWT combination carriers for delivery during the second half of 2018.

The customers in our CABU combination carrier business are amongst others alumina refineries, aluminum smelters and salt producers. The main commodities carried are caustic soda, alumina, bauxite and salt.

Ship management is performed by Klaveness Ship Management (KSM), certified to ISO 9000, ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18000.

Container Vessels

Klaveness provides container feeder vessels to global liner operators as well as regional feeder operators. Out of a fleet of eight container vessels, six are modern vessels delivered in 2013 and 2014, the “Eco-Flex 25” series.

The Eco-Flex 25 series represents the most economical and flexible technology currently available in the 2,500 TEU market, reducing fuel cost up to 40%:

  • Modern, electronically controlled engines with low-load tuning
  • Wide speed range with ability to super-slow steam
  • Trim assistant for fuel efficient cargo stowage
  • Continuous maintenance and performance monitoring

The outstanding trading flexibility reduces operational risks:

  • High reefer capacity with 536 plugs and a corresponding power output
  • Three 45t cranes
  • Powerful bow thruster
  • ITF and Australia fitted
  • Uni-fuel vessels
  • Ballast water treatment system

Commercial management is performed by Klaveness Asia in Singapore. Ship management is performed by Klaveness Ship Management (KSM), certified to ISO 9000, ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18000.

Bulk Carriers

In 2013 and 2014, Klaveness entered into contracts with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (YZJ) in China for an order of eight 82,000 dwt. ”Kamsarmax” bulk carriers. The vessels are expected to be delivered in 2016 and 2017.

Six of the vessels were resold to partners of Klaveness, with Klaveness providing project management and site supervision for the project. YZJ is a leading Chinese shipbuilder with over 50 years of shipbuilding history. Previous Klaveness vessels built there were delivered on time and costs.

The vessels represent the latest in fuel efficiency and will be employed through the Baumarine pool. Ship management will be performed by Klaveness Ship Management (KSM), certified to ISO 9000, ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18000.

Service Provider

Klaveness is a leading service provider to the global drybulk industry. Throughout the company’s history, Klaveness has proved to be a trusted partner for its business relations.

Today we continue this legacy through our pools and our ship management activities, where we offer commercial and technical management to our partners. Torvald Klaveness has been running pools for more than 50 years, and the business model has been adapted to industry changes and client needs. Today we have two streamlined spot market pools, Baumarine and Bulkhandling.

The Klaveness Pools

Torvald Klaveness has been running dry bulk pools for more than 50 years. Today we have the Bulkhandling Pool for Handymax, Supramax and Ultramax vessels as well as the Baumarine Pool for Panamax, Kamsarmax and Post Panamax vessels.

The pools operate within a three-month mandate, so they are well aligned with the spot market. The pool chartering teams in Oslo, Singapore and Shanghai have clear goals and mandates to utilize the ships capabilities in full. The pool members can rely on pool hire payments every 15 days, giving them a stable and predictable cashflow. Our pools are operated under full transparency on vessel performance and distribution of earnings among the pool members. Fairness and equal treatment are cornerstones in our pool model.

Performance Management
Our operations desk is manned by senior staff with seagoing experience who treat the pool vessels as if they were their own. The pool provides state-of-the-art hold cleaning equipment for all vessels and follows stringent and well documented procedures to maintain the holds’ condition, also when loading/discharging difficult cargoes.

We monitor vessel performance closely and benchmark pool vessels in order to optimise ships on speed and consumption wherever possible. Through systematic follow up, some 40% of ships entering the pool improve their performance. This increases cash flow to the direct benefit of pool members.

Risk Management
Risk Management is integrated in all we do, and all business partners are rated based on capital base, performance and reputation. The pools have not had losses on counterparts since the system was implemented in 2008.

Optimising vessel performance is one of the most challenging activities in a shipping company, as it requires alignment and co-operation between the commercial, operational and technical people ashore and on board. In addition, information is often dated when it reaches the stakeholders and peer information is missing. Symptoms can be large and unexplained variations in performance, unexpected differences between similar vessels and performance claims.

Klaveness is developing Perform to provide owners and operators with condensed, relevant and real-time information about their fleet’s actual performance. The users can access the information from any device, at any time, always updated:

  • Measure Track the real-time, weather adjusted speed and consumption for their vessels and share it internally as well as with the vessel, customer and service providers.
  • Benchmark Compare with vessels of the same design to establish their relative performance and the potential for improvements.
  • Monetize Quantify the value of the expected under- or over-performance, as a guide to optimizing TC descriptions and comparing cost and benefits of improvement initiatives.

In an increasingly digital world, Klaveness aim to utilise digital tools to interact more efficiently with our cargo customers, and keep them better informed. We are in the process of developing and testing the Cargo planner as an information ‘dashboard’ intended initially to give our cargo customers real-time information on positions of cargoes/vessels and forward shipment schedule.

The main purpose of the information dashboard is to simplify information collection and reduce inefficiency in communication. This should enable our customers to increase their focus on optimising logistics and address problems before they become critical.

With CARGO customers can view all their cargos in one place, track progress and view history for each cargo. The most efficient, useful and intuitive access to cargo flow.

Innovation is an integral part of our overall vision and values in Klaveness, and shall take place in all of our activities.

The pace of change is increasing. The average age of a company is coming down fast, and new, innovative companies are threatening almost every part of traditional businesses. In order to survive, also in shipping, we need to constantly find new ways to create customer value and new business models. Our mantra is “try a little, learn a lot” and we believe the future winners are those who experiment most, fastest and cheapest.

The Klaveness Lab

When it comes to developing digital solutions, we need to “think and act as a start-up company”.

We have therefore established Klaveness Laboratories (KLAB) as the incubator for development of new digital solutions and services. The unit will be organised with external entrepreneurs and experts in addition to internal resources. In order to secure involvement from the line, all projects will also include relevant internal expertise.

KLAB shall evaluate, prototype, test, and deliver digital solutions to the organisation. The unit shall identify opportunities arising from new technologies, and build and nurture a strong external network. KLAB shall also actively scout for and be able to invest in companies, solutions or technologies that can enrich our digital platform.

Arrows moving in a circle

The sprint

The design sprint is one of the ways we employ our mantra “try a little learn a lot”.

The sprint is a two week problem solving technique spent on answering critical business questions, by designing, prototyping and testing new ideas in collaboration with our customers.

We at Klaveness use the sprint method because we believe future winners are those who are able to experiment the most, fastest, at the lowest cost.

talented entrepreneurs

We at Klaveness have spent recent years managing and developing ideas for our industry.

We now want to up our game, and expand to include potential digital partners, entrepreneurs, academics and professionals related to digital and shipping.

We welcome technologies and solutions that can enrich our digital services, and want to build relations across industries and attract talent to exchange experiences and facilitate collaboration.

Ideas are worth sharing. Ideas are problems worth solving. Ideas are opportunities worth grabbing.

That is why we at Klaveness have a web page where our employees can submit ideas, and give feedback and support to those that they believe should be prioritised. The ideas are continuously screened for content and very often lead to more questions than answers.

Here at Klaveness we also have a process for solving problems that allow us to quickly engage necessary competence among our staff and quickly determine whether this is a problem worth solving or an opportunity worth grabbing. If YES we quickly prototype potential solutions that can be taken to market.
