Financial Analyst Ola Sekkesæter recently presented his paper on “How Big Data can make shipping greener” at the Shipping in Changing Climates (SCC) conference in London.

Earlier this year Ola Sekkesæter, Financial Analyst at Klaveness wrote his master thesis on how AIS data can be used for cargo flow estimations to aid decision making for owners and charterers in the shipping industry. Upon completing his thesis, he also wrote a paper addressing how Big Data like AIS data can help to enforce the new set of environmental regulations that aim to reduce carbon emissions. 

His paper, titled “How Big Data can make shipping greener”, was later selected for publication by the Shipping in Changing Climates (SCC) conference, and Ola just recently travelled to London to share his findings at the conference. Following more than six months of research into the concept of Big Data and its potential to become an important tool for the maritime industry, he was excited to present his work to peers and other stakeholders.

Ola explains his motivation for writing on the subject, “When I first started to research Big Data and its possible applications within the shipping industry, I soon came to realize that Big Data like AIS data can be used for analytical purposes in a wide range of areas. One such area is that of the monitoring and estimation of vessels’ carbon emissions, which is a critical step to IMO’s goal of reducing the carbon footprint of the shipping industry. Given the global and fragmented nature of the shipping industry, there is no doubt that the introduction of mandatory CO2 caps for ships may be challenging to implement. However, the use of AIS data as a support tool may make life for policymakers at the EU and the IMO a little bit easier.
